The students of fifth and sixth grade have just finished an interdisciplinary project between Lengua and Art classes involving Surrealist Art, and spontaneous, stream-of-consciousness writing, inspired by Jean Arp, one of the founders of the Dada Art Movement. In order to remove ourselves from the overly planned process often involved in both creating an artwork and writing, we dipped lengths of string in glue and allowed them to fall randomly on our paper. Once it was dry, we filled in the spaces with… whatever we wanted! Some students focused on abstract forms, while others tried to find images in the random string squiggles. Then, to finish off the activity, they included some of the words and phrases from their writing on the artwork itself. As Jean Arp said “Art is a fruit that grows in man.”
