As winter winds begin to blow, our students have been getting comfortable with textiles in Art class. What can’t you do with a piece of string, a bit of yarn, some wool, or even fabric? Second graders created beautiful “spider-scares” out of conkers, sticks, and yarn. In 3rd grade we began to learn the process of weaving by creating circular weavings that ended up looking like jellyfish! 4th graders took their weaving knowledge to the next level, creating painted tapestries they designed themselves, each as unique as they are. In 5th grade, students actually created their own pieces of felt by putting bits of loose wool in a plastic bag with soapy water and agitating it until the fibers clung together. And 6th graders have designed and sewn their own “Arpilleras” (based on Chilean burlap artwork), showcasing social issues they care about, and how they want to see the world in the future. My goodness, what a busy month this has been. And that was all before preparing for our holiday send-off!
Textiles en la clase de Arte
Con la llegada de los vientos invernales, nuestros alumnos se han familiarizado con los tejidos en la clase de Arte. ¿Qué no se puede hacer con un trozo de cuerda, un poco de hilo, algo de lana o incluso tela? Los alumnos de segundo curso crearon preciosas «arañas» con castañas, palitos e hilo. En tercer grado, comenzamos a aprender el proceso de tejer creando tejidos circulares que terminaron pareciéndose a medusas. Los alumnos de cuarto grado llevaron sus conocimientos de tejido al siguiente nivel, creando tapices pintados que ellos mismos diseñaron, cada uno tan único como ellos mismos. En quinto grado, los alumnos crearon sus propias piezas de fieltro colocando trozos de lana suelta en una bolsa de plástico con agua jabonosa y agitando hasta que las fibras se unieron. Y los alumnos de sexto grado han diseñado y cosido sus propias «arpilleras» (basadas en las obras de arte chilenas de arpillera), mostrando los problemas sociales que les preocupan y cómo quieren ver el mundo en el futuro. ¡Dios mío, qué mes tan ajetreado ha sido! ¡Y todo eso antes de preparar nuestra despedida navideña!
