HEART PUMP PROJECT

Montessori - Heart Pump Project

Year 2 Natural Science

Yesterday, in Year 2 Natural Science, the children explored how the heart pumps blood around the body. We began by discussing the heart’s main function and its importance in keeping us alive and healthy. To bring the concept to life, we created a simple hands-on model using two straws – one representing the left ventricle and the other the aorta.

Working in small groups, the children assembled their models and took turns imitating the heartbeat by gently squeezing the straws to mimic the pumping action. They were fascinated to see how the ‘blood’ (represented by water) moved through the system, helping them understand how the heart pushes blood to all parts of the body.

It was a lively and engaging lesson that encouraged teamwork, curiosity, and scientific thinking. The model proved to be a very effective visual aid, helping the children to appreciate just how hard our hearts work every moment of the day to keep us alive and energised.
